1958 MG A Coupe in South Africa

1958 MGA Coupe

The early years of this charming MGA Coupe are shrouded in mystery. It was built at Motor Assemblies in Durban, now Toyota, and the earliest recorded registration is Port Shepstone in Natal. It was here that its first registration expired before it was sold to and restored in Gauteng. At this time it was fitted with a replacement 1500 cc MG Magnette engine.

The MGA was re-registered as “built up” in 2011 before being acquired by its current owner in 2013 and transferred to Knysna. Over the next 10 years, the braking, cooling and fueling systems were restored, as were the starter motor, dynamo and regulator. The 1500 cc engine was removed in 2022 and rebuilt to competition specification for installation in an A40 Special single seat race car.

An available 1622 cc AMW code engine was rebuilt and installed in the MGA, which with twin SU Carburettors, delivers a 50% increase in power. The car is fitted with an Oil Cooler that makes a difference to engine temperature. There is minor undercoat failure in some areas of the paintwork.

The MGA is fitted with Deluxe Seats in red leather and the carpets are in good condition. The engine bay is clean with all its original tags still in place. No rust or oil leaks are visible.

This MGA Coupe is well presented in very good condition. It starts and runs very well and has recently been fitted with new tyres.

Caution: This MGA is a classic car and does not have the passenger and system safety characteristics of modern vehicles. But it is solid and can be driven regularly. It loves shows and Cars@Coffee meets.
